Some Comments from Trust Awardees
Omar Robertson received an award in 2010. Here are his comments on how the Trust helped him:
"The Errol Barrow Trust Fund of Canada provided me with funding to help me finish my last year at the Stratford Chef School (in London, Ontario) where I completed my studies in Restaurant Management and Design. The assistance provided to me by the Fund was instrumental in allowing me to pay off the rest of my tuition and aid in the purchase of essential tools and manuals to complete my studies.
The Fund is without question an invaluable resource that aides students in completing their studies so that they are able to return to Barbados and contribute to society. I cannot think of a cause more fitting or in tune with the principles and life of Errol Walton Barrow. I consider the Fund to be one of the greatest honors to his Legacy and encourage it’s continuance for years to come. "
Patrick Best received an award in 1999. Here are his comments on how the Trust helped him:
“The Errol Barrow Trust Fund of Canada indeed provided valuable assistance in my pursuit of a B.Sc. at Guelph University. The fund paid my tuition and allowed me the opportunity to acquire a Specialized Honours Degree in Biomedical Toxicology. This financial support was pivotal as without the injection of it, I would have been unable to complete my studies.
This Biomedical Toxicology first degree was instrumental in me being employed as a Toxicologist by the Barbados Forensic Science Centre, Office of the Attorney General, in December 1997. In 1999 to 2003 I completed my M.Sc. in Toxicology at the University of Birmingham in England, having been sent and funded by the Barbados Government. I am currently employed at the Forensic Sciences Centre as the Head of the Forensic Toxicology Section. I do agree that this Fund is a useful Charity and would like to see it being used to help other Barbadians studying in Canada.”
Dr. Lisa Belle received an award for a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Toronto. Here are her comments:
“I have completed my Fellowship in Nephrology and returned to Barbados to practice in this area at Queen the Elizabeth Hospital.
The Grant from the Errol Barrow Memorial Trust Fund was invaluable. The costs of continuing education are quite phenomenal and when this undertaking is away from home and the costs of living and travel are added in, one can easily become overwhelmed with the finances. In my case the worry started to distract me from my original purpose. The fund allowed me to complete my fellowship and return to Barbados to make a valuable contribution.”
